National Ghost Hunting Day Turns Ten
A decade ago, one question started this: what if fascination with the unexplained could help keep history standing? Ten years and 17 countries later, we’re putting that mission into action.

We Started This. Then the World Joined In.
National Ghost Hunting Day™ began on October 1, 2016, built around a single idea: paranormal investigation as a way to fund the survival of historic places. Its centerpiece, the World’s Largest Ghost Hunt™, gathers investigators and property owners around the globe to begin their hunts at the same moment — a “shotgun start” that turns one night into an international event.
It wasn’t supposed to go global. The event launched as America’s Largest Ghost Hunt, but before its first year was even over, Australia and England had joined, and the name no longer fit. At its pre-pandemic peak, the hunt reached historic sites across the United States, England, Australia, Germany, India, Greece, Egypt, Romania, and the Philippines — including some of the most storied addresses in paranormal history.

THE mission
Every Hunt Has One Purpose: Preservation
Old buildings are expensive to keep standing, and the most atmospheric ones are often the most at risk. From the beginning, one rule has guided National Ghost Hunting Day: funds raised by participating sites stay with those sites — covering roofs, foundations, archives, insurance, and the unglamorous upkeep that decides whether a building survives another decade.
“The premise was never profit. It was that these buildings are running out of time, and the people who love them are running out of ways to pay for them. A ghost hunt is a fundraiser with better lighting.”- Maria Schmidt — Founder, National Ghost Hunting Day & CEO, Mysterious Adventures Tours
