If you had asked me what Romania was like before I became a tour director there, I probably would've given you the same answer most people do.
Dracula. Bran Castle. Halloween.
Maybe a few spooky castles tucked away in Transylvania.
I've always been fascinated by horror, folklore, and the darker corners of history, so the idea of leading Mysterious Adventures Tours‘ Romania Halloween experience sounded like an absolute dream. I pictured vampire legends, medieval fortresses, Halloween celebrations, and everything wonderfully gothic.
And don't get me wrong, that's all there. But after leading this tour, I realized something pretty quickly. Romania isn't a place that's defined by Dracula.
Dracula is simply the reason many of us discover one of the most beautiful countries in Europe.
That's certainly what happened to me.
Now, every time we return to Romania with a new group of travelers, I get to watch the same thing happen. People arrive excited about Bran Castle and Halloween, and somewhere along the journey, they stop talking about Dracula and start talking about Romania.
As the tour director, watching that transformation has become one of my favorite parts of the job.
Key Takeaways
- Dracula is the doorway, not the destination. Almost everyone books this tour for Bran Castle and Halloween. Almost no one is still talking about Dracula by the last night. Romania is a country with thousands of years of history that existed long before Bram Stoker ever picked up a pen.
- The Carpathians surprise people more than the castles do. There's a moment on every trip where the bus goes quiet somewhere in the mountains; rolling hills, villages tucked into valleys, forests that don't seem to end. “I had no idea Romania looked like this” is the single sentence I hear most.
- Bran Castle genuinely lives up to the hype. Standing there in person is nothing like the photos you've seen your whole life, and the Vampire Ball inside the castle on Halloween is exactly as memorable as people hope. It earns its reputation.
- The itinerary isn't just gothic — it's layered. Medieval Saxon settlements, the fairy-tale scale of Peleș Castle, the colorful streets of Sighișoara, Witches' Pond. It's part Halloween trip, part history tour, part scenic drive through a country that deserves to be mentioned alongside Switzerland and Austria.
- Romanian hospitality is the thing you can't manufacture. Beautiful castles exist all over Europe. What's harder to find are local guides who tell stories instead of reciting dates, and hosts who are genuinely proud to share their traditions. That's what changes people's minds about the country.
I Thought I Knew What This Tour Would Be
Before my first trip, I spent a lot of time preparing. I wanted to know the history inside and out. I reread Dracula. I refreshed myself on Vlad the Impaler's story. I studied every stop on our itinerary so I'd be ready to answer questions and help our travelers get the most out of the experience.
In my mind, I thought I was preparing to lead a Halloween tour centered around one of history's most famous legends.
What I didn't realize was that I was about to fall in love with an entire country.
The funny thing is, I don't think I'm alone in that. Most of our travelers come with the same expectations I had. They want to celebrate Halloween in Transylvania. They want to walk through Bran Castle. They want to see the places that inspired one of literature's most famous villains.
And they absolutely should. Those experiences are incredible. But by the end of the trip, very few people are still talking only about Dracula.
Instead, they're talking about the mountain scenery they weren't expecting, the medieval towns they could've wandered around for days, and just how genuinely welcoming everyone they met was.
There's a Moment That Happens on Almost Every Tour
One thing I've noticed after leading this tour is that there's always a point where the bus gets really quiet. It usually happens somewhere in the Carpathian Mountains.
One minute, everyone is chatting, sharing photos from the last stop, or asking questions about where we're headed next. Then, almost without anyone realizing it, the conversations fade away. People start looking out the windows instead.
The scenery has a way of doing that.
Rolling green hills stretch out in every direction. Tiny villages appear tucked into valleys, church steeples rise above red rooftops, and forests seem to go on forever. It's not the Romania most people imagined before they arrived.
Eventually, someone says it.
“I had no idea Romania looked like this.”
I hear that sentence on almost every trip, and it still makes me smile because I remember thinking the same thing during my first visit.
Romania doesn't try to impress you. It doesn't feel overly polished or built for tourists. It just feels authentic. Life moves at its own pace, and something is refreshing about that. It's one of those places that quietly grows on you without you even realizing it's happening.

Bran Castle Lives Up to Every Bit of the Hype
Of course, I'd be lying if I said Bran Castle isn't one of the highlights.
It absolutely is.
Seeing it for the first time is something I'll never get tired of, especially because I get to watch everyone else's reaction. You've seen photos your whole life, but standing there in person is completely different. It feels surreal knowing you're walking through one of the world's most recognizable castles, especially during Halloween when the atmosphere is unlike anything else.
The Vampire Ball is every bit as memorable as people hope it will be. The costumes, the music, the energy of celebrating Halloween inside Bran Castle- it's an experience that's hard to put into words.
But here's what's interesting.
Whenever the tour is over, and I ask people about their favorite part of the trip, the answers usually surprise me.
Sure, some people say Bran Castle.
But just as many talk about wandering the colorful streets of Sighișoara, sitting down for long dinners with the group, or simply watching the Romanian countryside roll by from the bus.
It's those unexpected moments that seem to stay with people the longest.
And honestly, I think that's what great travel is supposed to do.
My Favorite Part of the Tour Isn't Actually a Place
People sometimes ask me what my favorite stop in Romania is. It's a fair question, but it's surprisingly hard to answer.
Yes, Bran Castle is incredible. Peleș Castle looks like something straight out of a fairy tale. Sighișoara is one of those towns where you can't help but slow down and take everything in.
Every stop on the itinerary has its own personality, and I genuinely look forward to revisiting each one. But if I'm being honest, my favorite part of the tour isn't a destination at all. It's watching what happens to the people.
When we first meet at the airport, everyone is excited, but they're also a little unsure. Some people are traveling with friends or family, while others have come on their own. There's always that first-day awkwardness that comes with any group trip. Everyone is getting to know each other, figuring out personalities, and wondering what the next week is going to be like.
Then, somewhere along the way, everything changes.
Maybe it's after sharing dinner a few nights in a row. Maybe it's during a long drive through the mountains or after exploring another castle. However it happens, strangers slowly stop being strangers.
By the end of the tour, people are saving seats for each other on the bus, sharing photos they took during the day, laughing about inside jokes that didn't exist a week earlier, and making plans to travel together again someday.
As the tour director, I get a front-row seat to all of it. That's something I'll never take for granted.

Romania Is So Much More Than Dracula
I think one of the biggest misconceptions about Romania is that the country revolves around Dracula. It doesn't.
The Dracula story is part of Romania's identity, and it's certainly part of why many of us are drawn there in the first place. But once you're actually standing in Transylvania, you quickly realize that Romania has thousands of years of history that existed long before Bram Stoker ever picked up a pen.
One day, you're learning about medieval Saxon settlements that have stood for centuries. The next thing, you're walking through royal castles that feel almost too beautiful to be real. Then you're driving through mountain landscapes that make you wonder why Romania isn't mentioned in the same breath as Switzerland or Austria when people talk about scenic destinations in Europe.
That's probably what surprised me the most.
Romania never felt like a place built around one famous attraction. It felt like a country with layer after layer of history waiting to be uncovered.
Every day seemed to reveal another piece of the puzzle. And every day I found myself appreciating it a little more.

The People Are What Changed My Perspective
If I had to choose one thing that completely changed the way I think about Romania, it would be the people.
You can visit beautiful places anywhere in the world. There are incredible castles across Europe. There are stunning mountain ranges on nearly every continent. What you can't manufacture is genuine hospitality.
One of the things I love about leading this tour is watching our travelers interact with local guides, restaurant owners, hotel staff, and the people we meet throughout the journey. There's a warmth that feels completely natural. People are proud of their country, proud of their traditions, and genuinely excited to share them with visitors.
Our local guides don't just recite dates and historical facts. They tell stories because they want you to understand why those stories matter.
Restaurant owners want you to enjoy the meal they prepared. You never feel like you're just another tourist passing through. You feel welcomed.
And I think that's a big reason why Romania leaves such a lasting impression on people.

Romania Changed the Way I Think About Travel
Leading this tour has changed the way I travel.
Years ago, I probably would've judged a trip by how many famous landmarks I crossed off my list. Did I see the castle? Did I visit the museum? Did I get the picture?
Those things are still fun, of course. But they aren't what I remember most anymore. When I think back on Romania, I don't immediately picture Bran Castle.
I think about sitting around the dinner table after a full day of exploring, while everyone shared stories and laughed until the restaurant was closing around us.
I think about watching travelers light up as they realized Romania wasn't anything like what they expected.
I think about the conversations on the bus after we'd leave each destination, when people were still processing everything they'd seen. Those are the moments that stay with me.
The itinerary brings us to incredible places, but it's the experiences between those stops that make the journey unforgettable.
And I think that's the difference between simply visiting a destination and truly experiencing it.
Why We Keep Coming Back
I've been lucky enough to travel to some incredible places, and every destination leaves its mark differently. But there's something about Romania that keeps calling us back.
Maybe it's because every time we return, we notice something new. A street we hadn't paid attention to before. A conversation with one of our local guides that makes us see a familiar place differently. A meal that somehow tastes even better than we remembered.
Or maybe it's because we get to experience Romania through fresh eyes every single year.
No two groups are ever the same, and that's one of the things I love most about being a tour director. Every tour has its own personality. Different conversations, different jokes, different moments that end up becoming the stories everyone tells once they're back home. I've watched people arrive feeling nervous because they were traveling solo, only to leave with friends they still keep in touch with. I've seen travelers who came because they loved Dracula discover a fascination with Romanian history they never expected. I've even had people tell me Romania wasn't originally on their bucket list; it was simply a trip that sounded interesting. By the end of the week, they were already talking about coming back.
Those are the moments that remind me why I love what I do.

If You're Thinking About Visiting Romania…
If you're on the fence about visiting Romania, my advice is simple: don't try to fit it into a box.
Don't expect it to be only a Dracula tour. Don't expect it to be only a history tour. Don't expect it to be only a Halloween trip. It's a little bit of all of those things, but it's also so much more.
Come because you're curious. Come because you've always wanted to celebrate Halloween somewhere unforgettable. Come because you've heard the legends and want to see the places behind them. But leave a little room to be surprised.
Some of my favorite memories from Romania are the ones I never could have planned. They happened during conversations over dinner, while wandering through a medieval square that wasn't on my radar before, or simply looking out the window during a drive through the countryside.
Those are the moments that stay with you.
More Than a Tour
One thing I love about Mysterious Adventures Tours is that we don't believe travel should feel rushed. We intentionally build experiences that allow people to slow down, ask questions, and really connect with the places we're visiting.
As the tour director, one of my favorite things is seeing travelers become more than just people sharing the same itinerary.
By the end of the trip, we've shared meals, celebrated Halloween together inside Bran Castle, wandered through medieval towns, laughed on long bus rides, and made memories that simply wouldn't happen if you were trying to navigate the country on your own.
I've watched complete strangers become close friends on this tour, and I've watched people return home with a completely different opinion of Romania than the one they arrived with.
That's incredibly rewarding to witness.
