Exploring the Supernatural: Paranormal Investigations in Ireland
Ireland is a land steeped in history, myth, and legend, making it the perfect destination for exploring the supernatural. From haunted castles to ghostly apparitions, the country’s rich folklore and atmospheric locations provide a unique backdrop for paranormal investigations. During a recent trip, one of our travelers immersed themselves in this world, spending two thrilling nights investigating two extraordinary sites, uncovering the stories, spirits, and energies that make Ireland such a captivating place for seekers of the unexplained. Let’s continue our Journey with our guest Travel Writer, as she explores the supernatural in Ireland.
Paranormal Investigations at Charleville Castle
The highlight of our trip was spending two separate nights conducting paranormal investigations at two incredible locations. Our first investigation occurred at Charleville Castle, where we joined the local team, Púca Paranormal, made up of three amazing women: Rosemary, Danielle, and Rue. We were also introduced to Princess, the castle’s main attraction for much of our group. After a tour of the investigation areas, the night began. Each member of Púca Paranormal led a session in a different part of the castle. I started in the Red Room, a space historically reserved for women while the men gathered elsewhere.

Our group mostly worked with pendulums to ask yes-or-no questions. Rosemary started by asking for a volunteer to lie on the bed. I quickly raised my hand, feeling an unexplainable pull to sit on it during the tour. What followed was roughly 20 minutes of intense focus, watching the chandelier swing in response to the group’s questions. The most striking moment came when a male participant introduced himself—the chandelier swung wildly, and I immediately sensed he needed to lie on the bed next. Historically, men were forbidden in this room during the castle’s prime.
Chilled to the bone and suppressing full-body shivers, I eventually tapped out. Rosemary debriefed me privately, where I shared my impressions and insisted that the male participant should take my place. Sure enough, when I returned, he was lying on the bed. I tried the dowsing rods next, which pointed right back to me when asked who should return to the bed. However, Rosemary gently declined, saying, “They already had their chance with you.” Despite this, I can’t wait to return to Charleville Castle for another chance to explore the supernatural energy in the Red Room.
While part of me wanted to spend the entire night there, I was also eager to experience the rest of the castle. My next stop was the stairwell, where I tried to connect with Harriett, a seven-year-old girl who tragically fell to her death while attempting to slide down the curved railing. Despite her sad story, she didn’t engage with me—I sensed she might have picked up on my unease around children.
The night ended in the basement, where Grant and Danielle were running an Estes Method session using a spirit box. When I arrived, a conversation with a spirit was already underway. The spirit disliked Grant, even causing the equipment to malfunction until he left the room. After he returned unannounced, the spirit box stopped working again—only to resume when Grant exited once more. This marked the end of our investigation at Charleville Castle.

Leap Castle: Paranormal Investigations on Halloween
The second night brought us to Leap Castle, often called the most haunted castle in Ireland. To make things even spookier, our investigation took place on Halloween—a night when the veil between worlds is said to be at its thinnest—and during a moonless new moon.
Travellers in Leap Castle with owner, Sean Ryan.
When people asked about our trip, my excitement about spending the night at Leap Castle was always the first thing I mentioned. This was the part of the journey that captivated me most. Armed with my gear, I was thrilled to learn that the Púca Paranormal team would be joining us again.
The night began with a warm welcome from Leap Castle’s owner, Sean Ryan, who shared the castle’s history and treated us to traditional Irish folk songs. After enjoying bread and butter, we divided into groups and began investigating. I was drawn to the top floor, where Grant and Danielle were using a spirit box to communicate with the unseen. While seated near a small closet, I repeatedly felt as though someone was peeking around the corner at me.
A break from the roaring fire offered much-needed warmth, complemented by a shot of whiskey. Some of us followed Grant outside to connect with the fae, bringing buttered bread as offerings. Sitting on the lawn in the chilly October air, we experienced a surreal moment: the distinct scent of flowers, including hibiscus, drifted over us. This felt deeply personal, connecting me to my Hawaiian heritage.
The night ended with a séance led by Rosemary on the second floor. We formed a circle, hands touching, and attempted to channel the castle’s energy. At one point, I felt as though I was rocking back and forth, much like riding a horse. While nothing significant occurred for me, others in the group experienced profound energy shifts.
Hellfire Club: A Final Paranormal Encounter
On our last day in Ireland, we visited the Hellfire Club, a notorious location tied to black magic and supernatural legends. One story tells of a stranger with hooves for feet who appeared during a card game, believed to be the devil himself.
After a scenic hike to the ruins, we explored the small two-story building. Drawn to a room halfway up the stairs, my friend and I set up equipment for a quick session. Using my Deadbell, which detects energy fluctuations, we recorded two distinct rings—a strong indicator of a spirit’s presence. Unfortunately, we had to cut the session short to rejoin the group, but I’m determined to return and continue the investigation.
A Journey into the Supernatural
These investigations were unforgettable. From the historic and haunted Charleville Castle to the eerie Leap Castle and the enigmatic Hellfire Club, each location offered unique insights into the paranormal.
For those intrigued by the supernatural, Ireland is a must-visit destination. If you’re interested in exploring more of my paranormal adventures, come back tomorrow as our guest shares with us another haunting blog from her time in Ireland.
