Haunted Scotland Travel Journal: Witches, Castles, and Ghostly Encounters

Step inside our Witches and Phantoms of Scotland tour with psychic medium Sarah Lemos — a journey through haunted castles, witch trial sites, and the unseen realms that still linger beneath Scotland’s mist.

There are places in this world where the air itself feels charged, where mist clings to stone walls like memory, and where stories are not just told; they are felt. Scotland is one of those places.

From the first breath of its cool Highland air, you sense something ancient stirring beneath the hills, as though the land remembers every soul that ever walked it.

On Mysterious Adventures Tours’ Witches and Phantoms of Scotland, travelers stepped into this liminal realm guided by psychic medium Sarah Lemos, whose gift for bridging seen and unseen worlds turned every shadow into a conversation.

This is not simply a retelling. It is a travel journal — a glimpse into what it feels like to walk Scotland’s haunted pathways, where every echo may be a whisper from the past.

Arrival in Scotland: A Land Steeped in Lore

Arrival in Edinburgh. Witches and Phantoms of Scotland Tour with Sarah Lemos, Spiritual Tour

Arrival in Edinburgh.

Our journey began in Edinburgh, a city that wears its history on its sleeve. The cobblestones gleamed under the lamplight, the distant drone of bagpipes winding through the closes. Gothic spires rose into the fog, their silhouettes as dramatic as the legends they guard.

From the moment we arrived, the veil felt thinner. The energy of the city was layered with centuries of triumph and tragedy, and it wrapped around us like a living thing.

Mysterious Adventures Tours is not about mere sightseeing. It is about crossing thresholds, about entering spaces where story and spirit entwine. And in Scotland, the story begins the moment your feet touch its soil.

Witches of Scotland: Real Stories from the Past

Journal Entry:
“Standing on the stones where trials once unfolded, we could almost hear their voices. Not screams, but whispers — fragments of lives unjustly taken.”

We traced the haunting legacy of the North Berwick witch trials, learning of Agnes Sampson and those who were condemned for supposed dealings with the devil. The wind off the North Sea carried a chill, one that felt older than the weather itself.

Then came one of the most powerful moments of our trip: our visit to Lenny Low’s Witchcraft Museum.

Inside those dimly lit rooms, surrounded by relics of superstition and sorrow, Lenny himself shared the brutal truths of Scotland’s witch trials. His knowledge was vast, his storytelling compassionate. Some travelers even tried on replicas of the torture devices once used to extract false confessions. It was harrowing, but necessary.

The museum unveiled its newest artifact, a haunting piece sponsored by Mysterious Adventures Tours. And before we left, Lenny looked through each traveler’s surname to trace ancestral ties to the witch trials.

Shock rippled through the group. Some discovered ancestors who had been accused of witchcraft. Others found names among the accusers.

As one guest said quietly, “It’s strange to realize that the same blood that condemned also defended.”

That moment, standing together in shared history, was transformative. Placing a hand on the display case, I heard the words “They are not forgotten. By remembering, we give them peace.”

Haunted Castles & Phantom Encounters

Our group explored inside Edinburgh Castle. Witches and Phantoms of Scotland Tour with Sarah Lemos, spiritual tour

Our group explored inside Edinburgh Castle.

Scotland’s castles stand like sentinels. Stone giants keeping watch over centuries.

At Edinburgh Castle, the air felt charged, heavy with presence. The faint tramp of boots echoed down empty corridors. Some swore they heard the metallic clatter of weapons. Perhaps the old garrison still stands its spectral post.

At Stirling Castle, legend speaks of the Highland Ghost, a figure in traditional dress seen wandering the ramparts. More than one of us caught a glimpse of movement that could not be explained.

And in Greyfriars Kirkyard, we braved the night to confront the infamous Mackenzie Poltergeist. The cold that met us there felt purposeful,  intelligent. We stood in silence, each of us sensing something unseen move through the dark.

Journal Entry:
“We held our breath as the cold swept across us. Was it only the Scottish wind or something brushing close enough to remind us that we were not alone?”

But our journey of encounters had only begun.

The Dalmahoy Hotel Investigation

Our accommodations at the Dalmahoy Hotel proved more than historic; they were haunted.

When we asked the hotel if an investigation might be possible, the manager’s eyes lit up. She eagerly led us through the oldest wing, sharing stories of guests fleeing their rooms in terror and staff refusing to enter certain halls alone.

That evening, the hotel graciously opened two upstairs boardrooms known for their phenomena. The staff, even a few off-duty employees, joined us for the investigation, eager yet nervous.

Psychic medium Sarah Lemos led the session. The air grew still as EMF meters flickered to life. A sudden chill swept through the room, and the silence thickened into something almost tangible.

Afterward, the hotel staff, visibly moved, shared more stories. That night, none of us slept the same.

The Banshee Labyrinth

Exploring the South Bridge Vaults. Witches and Phantoms of Scotland, Spiritual Tour

Exploring Edinburgh’s underground in the South Bridge Vaults.

Later in the tour, we descended into the Banshee Labyrinth, a bar renowned as one of Scotland’s most haunted sites. Its ancient tunnels, carved from Edinburgh’s underbelly, radiated both mischief and menace.

We split into small groups, each exploring a different chamber. The energy shifted with every room, laughter in one, sorrow in the next. One guest swore they heard a woman humming. Another felt a tap on their shoulder when no one stood behind them.

By the end, even the skeptics were quiet, thoughtful. You see, the veil doesn’t always frighten; sometimes it teaches.

Transformation on the Road

Some came to Scotland seeking chills. Most left with something deeper, connection.

One traveler wrote, “I expected ghost stories. What I found was my own reflection — how fear, loss, and faith live in all of us.”

Group rituals, nightly storytelling, and moments of stillness turned this journey into something sacred. It wasn’t only about ghosts; it was about acknowledging the unseen threads that bind us to history, to one another, and to the spirit of place.

As it is often said, “When we listen to the dead, we learn how to live.”

One guest shared, “I didn’t just hear about witches and ghosts. I felt their stories move through me. That’s what made this journey unforgettable.”

Every moment, from the Open Door Day in Aberdeen, where we explored historic Masonic halls and spoke with the Worship Master himself, to the quiet joy of feeding the Highland Coos near Inverness, carried its own kind of magic.

It reminded us that transformation doesn’t always happen in grand rituals. Sometimes it’s found in laughter, in shared meals, in the warmth of strangers becoming friends.

Journal Entry:
“By the final night, we were more than travelers. We were a circle, a family, bound by story, spirit, and Scotland itself.”
