World UFO Day: Exploring Haunted Locations and UFO Lore in Romania and Japan
On July 2nd, the world turns its eyes to the skies. It’s World UFO Day—a time to honor the unknown, contemplate the cosmos, and revisit the most mysterious encounters humanity has ever recorded. While Roswell, New Mexico, often dominates the headlines, this year let’s pivot our lens eastward and explore two lesser-known hotspots teeming with extraterrestrial lore: the haunting forests of Romania and the sky-kissed mountains of Japan.
Both countries brim with rich traditions, ancient spirituality, and unexplainable phenomena that blur the lines between myth, mysticism, and contact from beyond. And for the paranormal traveler, they offer much more than folklore—they offer an invitation to step inside the story.
🛸 Romania: Where Legends Meet the Skies

(Wikipedia)
When one thinks of Romania, Dracula’s shadow often looms largest. But nestled in the heart of this ancient land is a different kind of legend—one rooted not in vampires, but in unearthly lights, vanished time, and sky visitors.
The Hoia-Baciu Forest: Romania’s Bermuda Triangle
Also known as the Bermuda Triangle of Transylvania, Hoia-Baciu Forest near Cluj-Napoca is the center of Romania’s strangest UFO encounters. The forest is infamous for its eerie atmosphere—helically growing trees in impossible spirals, a ring-shaped clearing that never grows a single thing, and claims of anyone who ventures in and out several hours—or days—later with a memory lapse of what occurred.
But it wasn’t until 1968 that Hoia-Baciu entered UFO lore around the world. A military technician, Emil Barnea, captured a photo of a disc-shaped vehicle hovering over a clearing. The photo, as opposed to most investigations of the period, was taken in bright sunlight and examined by experts who found nothing to indicate it was a forgery. And so it has gone: strange lights, radiation readings, and unexplained disappearances.
Visitors have reported feeling dizzy, nauseous, and a feeling of being watched. Ghost hunter investigators are adamant that the area is rich in electromagnetic anomalies, and possibly even interdimensional rifts and portals. Some believe that the woods constitute a “thin place” between worlds.

🌠 Japan: Celestial Encounters of the Ancient Kind
Thousands of miles away, Japan offers a quieter but no less robust history of UFO activity. Blending Buddhist philosophy, ancient mythological traditions, and postwar sightings, Japan’s relationship to the skies is rooted in awe and deference.
The Utsuro-Bune: The Legend of Japan’s Initial Close Encounter Story
Fishermen in and around Hitachi Province in 1803 claimed to have found a bizarre round ship floating out in the sea. A female with pale skin, red hair, and unusual clothing was in it. She carried a box that no one could touch. Though she spoke a different tongue, eye-witnesses related that she looked calm and radiant.
The ship ended up being known as the Utsuro-Bune (hollow ship), and it was illustrated in detail in a number of samurai-era books and paintings. Some have interpreted it as a formalized extraterrestrial sighting—an attempt at naively documenting a ship and occupant too advanced to be understood.
This event has fascinated UFO enthusiasts throughout the decades, and parallels have been drawn with recent sightings of saucers and extraterrestrial beings.
Modern Reports of UFOs: From Fukui to Fukushima
Modern reports are nothing new to Japan. In 1975, a series of Fukui Prefecture sightings involved fast-moving crafts that hovered and then vanished at unnatural angles. In 2020, Japan’s Defense Ministry made public a protocol for handling UFO sightings, a sign that serious national attention has been paid to the matter.
Culturally, Japan does not draw so hard a line between the spiritual and extraterrestrial. Shinto shrines, kami spirits, and celestial beings frequently coexist pleasantly in local mythos. This unique prism allows paranormal tourism in Japan to scrutinize UFO mythos besides ghost stories, yokai mythos, and ancestor worship.
